Review:
An entertaining mix of rootsy originals, Pearl River is an intricate suffuse of Delta blues, Southern-fried country funk, and roots-rock. Mike Zito is a gifted vocalist and an accomplished song writer, belting out a bevy of bluesier numbers with passion and finesse emphasizing full, throaty vocals. Zito draws influences and inspiration from the likes of Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Many of the songs propound on standard blues imagery, but Zito offers glimpses of hope through change, self-realization, even salvation. What makes Pearl River special is Zito's ability to convey those emotions musically as well as lyrically.
This album features a song that could well be the independent blues & roots song of the year. The title song, Pearl River is a fiery composite of delta blues and roots music. Featuring Cyril Neville on vocal accompaniment (he also co-wrote the song), Pearl River is a bayou-bluesy, dusty road eulogy with an emphatic gospel feel. Zito is at his gritty best vocally and Neville is absolutely regal. Reese Wynans' sublimely fervent keyboards marinate well with Zito's guitar solos and impassioned vocals. Pearl River will likely spawn a blues/country/rock crossover hit for Zito.
One Step At A Time is the first single release from Pearl River and features Anders Osborne on acoustic guitar and accompanying vocals. Here Zito is at his soulful best, raising his stock as a singer/songwriter. Expressive and lively, there is a timelessness to this song; it feels like a standard. Alternating with him on lead vocals, Osborne offers a more casual style that makes a nice contrast to Zito's intensity and their harmonies are flawless. You'll find One Step At A Time impossible to forget.
Shoes Blues has a funky 1960's Memphis revivalist feel that is deep, raw and reminiscent of the legendary Stax Records signature sound. Here Zito performs a duet with Susan Cowsill (of The Cowsills fame). The vocal interplay works well; Cowsill offers heart-felt, country-accented vocals that perfectly underscore Zito's resonant sound, and again, the interplay between Wynans on keys and Zito on guitar is magical.
Other standout tracks include Dirty Blond and Natural Born Lover, both relentless, Texas-blues rave-ups that are roaring and impassioned tributes to some of the most vital, influential, and yet often unheralded figures in blues/rock, such as Jimmie Vaughan, Doyle Bramhill, C.C. Adcock and Guitar Slim. All Last Night is an unrestrained and vehement blues jam that will melt your CD player.
After four independent releases and his 2008 national debut with Today, Mike Zito is about to embark into somewhat epic territory as Pearl River will surely garner national mainstream and blues/country/roots crossover accolades. Produced by David Z. (Prince, Buddy Guy, Etta James, Jonny Lang) and joined by a handful of guests, including Cyril Neville, Anders Osborne, Reese Wynans and Susan Cowsill, Pearl River is Mike Zito's most accomplished work to date. This five-star release comes with our highest recommendation.

About Mike Zito:
Growing up in St. Louis, Missouri, Zito was immersed in the gritty sounds of the south side that would unknowingly become the groundwork of his future in music. Like the legends before him, music has coursed through his veins from the early age of five, when he began singing and performing. It didn’t take long for him to discover his instrument of choice – electric guitar – after receiving a Van Halen record for his birthday. His education and journey were just starting – little did he know he would find himself among such legends at a local guitar shop just out of high school. “Everyone from Chuck Berry to Bennie Smith came in that store,” Zito shares of his experience. “I soaked up the sounds of that store and began building my own style.”
Zito’s journey took off at the age of 19, when he busted into the local St. Louis music scene, developing his sound even further from the stage. His first independent release arrived in 1996, titled “Blue Room” which included raw and funky songs “Hollywood” and “Pull the Trigger”. His songwriting experience would break through on his sophomore release titled “America’s Most Wanted” in 1999. This album shares his pop sensibilities and intense guitar work. "Crazy People", "Deal Me In" and his own rendition of Elton John’s "Rocket Man" all set the pace to bring him into a national audience.
With a clean slate and real world experiences to include in his songwriting, Zito released “Slow it Down” in 2004. Including songs like “Long Dark Road,” “Change My Ways” and the title track, “Slow it Down” Zito share what life experiences had taught him. He formed a new solid band and began again playing full-time across the country with over 250 shows in 2005. “Music can change everything…how you feel, how you see and what you believe,” Zito explains.
He would find his true sound from all his experiences, new and old, and release his fourth album, “Superman” in 2006. Touted as “Soulful pop ” critics would pen it as Zito’s sound with his voice and vocals rising above the music. His formative influences blend with additional musical heroes and legends such as Prince, Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, SRV, Walter Trout, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Danny Gatton, and even rising artists like John Mayer. His journey has lead him to a critical point in his life and career to a larger audience and sharing the stage with national recording artists such as Chuck Berry, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Tab Benoit, Walter Trout, Bernard Allison, Coco Montoya, Joe Bonamassa and many more. In 2007, Zito’s path crossed with Randy Chortkoff of Delta Groove Music. Within months he penned a deal and gained full support with Chortkoff’s label which later unveiled his national debut album “Today” on Eclecto Groove Records in 2008. Boasting top notch production values under the guidance of producers David Z and Tony Braunagel, along with assistance from a team of world class musicians that included keyboardist Bentmont Tench and bassist James “Hutch” Hutchinson, Zito realized his most satisfying and accomplished work to date. “Today” garnered high praise and critical acclaim for Zito’s strengthened focus on songwriting, and his resulting efforts landed the album on the Billboard blues charts for six weeks, in addition to daily rotation on Sirius Satellite radio.
“Pearl River” followed in 2009, bringing Zito’s guitar back to the forefront, while still maintaining an emphasis on his affective songwriting. The result was a rollicking slice of Americana served up with heaping slabs of greasy New Orleans funk, gritty blues and good old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll. The album was additionally bolstered by an all-star cast that featured Cyril Neville, Anders Osborne, Reese Wynans, Susan Cowsill, Lynwood Slim and Jumpin’ Johnny Sansone. His collaboration with Cyril Neville on the album’s title track “Pearl River,” nabbed him a 2010 Blues Music Award for Song of the Year.
His latest release “Greyhound”- produced by Grammy-Award winning guitarist/singer/songwriter Anders Osborne - is the continuation of the songwriting process established by Zito on his two previous and critically acclaimed recordings on Eclecto Groove Records. His music still retains its bluesy Americana charm while also emphasizing that dusty, big wide-open Texas sound. Here, we find Zito exploring more personal and introspective themes; inspired by the Greyhound bus that helped carry him on his way out of town as a young man, ultimately steering him onto his current pathway and direction in life.

Review:
Anton Mink is a band from Louisville, Kentucky. Two very different people met through an ad in a local alternative magazine, then they met two other very different people through an ad posted at a local music store. In October 2006, the band recorded its debut album in Glasgow, Kentucky. The full length album was released on the band's own label in April 2007. This release cranks out some seriously consistent, and consistently fun garage rock.
A mash-up of inspired beats, new-wave rhythm and garage rock guitars, the self-titled CD is a tight, cohesive output that's as intriguing as it is good, but it's also a lot of fun. The first two songs on the disc define the term "sure-fire". Everything, the first song, comes at you from all directions, full of snarling low-slung riffs right in the middle that explode like a nuclear warhead on the choruses. Monster Trucks follows and uses a similar formula and really sets the tone of the CD.
However, on the third track, Anton Mink takes a directional one-eighty with the ethereal Daddy Long Legs, which is a great change of pace and, along with Armies and Unhappy is one of the highlights of this release. Chloa's vocals on this track are heartrendingly amazing. Another favorite, Truck Stop can best be described as Liz Phair meets Lucinda Williams, and Unhappy, well that's my favorite song on the CD; simply put it grabs you by the balls from the opening chords and squeezes until you are nearly breathless.
If you are looking for a flat-out, put-down rave-up, then Anton Mink is a disc that is a must have for your CD collection. The instrumentation is super tight, the production is remarkable without the studio super-hype of over-driven and monotonously woven melodies so prevalent in music today, and the bad-ass vocals deliver angst, longing, despair, guilt, and a little raw hatred. Memorize the songs... they will quickly grow on you, and infect you, and take you over.

CD Review - Blind For Love by Ana Popovic
"Ana Popovic is a fine example of a blues artist who takes new directions while remaining true to the essence of the genre… Though capable of thunderous, Stevie Ray Vaughan-inspired guitar solos, Popovic is equally adept at a quieter, more contemplative style."

Review:
The world is a better place thanks to the union of Ana Popovic and producer Mark Dearnley (AC/DC, PAUL McCARTNEY, TOM PETTY and many more) on Ana's latest release Blind For Love. Recalling great purveyors of unabashedly blistering female blues rock and soul, such as Susan Tedeschi, Bonnie Raitt and Janis Joplin, Blind For Love is both a sublime and full-bodied release. Popovic is indeed a heavy presence on this effort; she wrote and arranged all of the tracks, and co-produced the CD as well as providing lead guitar and vocals. This is an outstanding and very polished release that is at often times magnificent. The music herein will simply sweep you away.
The energizing Nothing Personal kicks off the disc, a straight-ahead blues and rock number that is the first single release from the CD. Unveiling her backing band, the song features a number of highlights in addition to Popovic's guitar work. The backing vocals are strong and add a gospel-like feel, and the interplay between Ana and keyboardist Mike Finnigan is a strength here. Nothing Personal segues perfectly into the second track, Wrong Woman.
Have you ever heard a song with a defining moment that was so good upon first listen that you have actually muttered "Are you kidding me....." to yourself (in, of course, the most complimentary and reverent sense of the phrase)? Some examples include the church organ on the Beatles "Let It Be", the opening riff of Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Pride and Joy" and Keith Richards' feedback on "Gimme Shelter". Add Ana's guitar solo at the end of Wrong Woman to the list. At precisely 2:46 into the song Popovic takes an anthemic and very good, yet formulaic rock number and launches it into stratospheric territory with a fervently passionate guitar solo that will literally melt your speakers.
By not leaning completely on the tried and true, sometimes too-precious roots of blues music, Popovic adds elements of funk and rhythm for a strikingly new authenticity and the result is a pleasing and crafty vignette. With a blistering arrangement reminiscent of Prince (yes, Prince) and James Brown, Lives That Don't Exist is an incredibly funky example, an eclectic traverse of blues, rock and funk that melds perfectly. Popovic provides a white-hot guitar solo to the stellar work of bassist Ronald Jonker to create an infectious groove replete with drop-dead trumpet and sax accompaniment from Darrel Leonard and Joe Sublett that is a full-tilt boogie.
Popovic demonstrates a more soulful and jazzy side as well as her range and musical diversity on the title song Blind For Love. Vocally, Ana is strong here, reaching the upper level of her range smoothly and with little effort. She also accentuates great jazz guitar with the use of a slide, and the song is a welcome break in the flow of the disc. Popovic is equally strong on More Real which is again a downtempo, jazzy number, but with a more classic feel to her guitar work in the mold of Mark Knopfler. More Real and The Only Reason are the best of the downtempo numbers on the disc.
As far as flat out blues numbers, on Blues For M Popovic goes all out here and succeeds, and likely draws comparisons to Janis Joplin. This is classic blues, down and dirty, vocally aching and accentuated by her tremendous guitar solo. The fretwork is astounding, picking up the pace when necessary to evoke Popovic's true feelings here. If one were to make the comparison to Joplin, then make no mistake, vocally her range far exceeds Ms. Joplin and the passion is right on par, so there is that validity.
Other highlights include Putting Out The APB and Get Back Home To You.
Some of the previous reviews for this CD have labeled Blind For Love as a blues CD, but that is too limiting and somewhat incorrect. This is a genuine blues, rock, funk and soul hybrid that showcases Ana Popovic's stunning guitar work as well as her vocal abilities and musical diversity in a number of genre-bending tracks. The arrangements and production are top notch, and Popovic's abilities as a musician and songwriter are unquestionably first-rate. This a CD you will want to add to your collection and keep in heavy rotation on your personal playlist.

About Ana Popovic:
May 13th 1976, Ana Popovic was born in the war torn town of Belgrade, formerly Yugoslavia, the first daughter of Milutin and Vesna Popovic. Ana grew up in a warm and loving family where music was very important. Her father Milutin is a highly recognized guitar / bass player, who throughout her youth, always invited friends over for nightly jam sessions where Ana listened and analyzed the deep artistic roots of her music. In this atmosphere, she quickly picked up her father’s impressive blues and soul record collection, grabbed his guitar and went to work at a young age of 15. Since then, Ana Popovic has developed into an incredible guitarist/vocalist who now currently resides in The Netherlands. The most impressive aspect of Ana's music is her diversity of techniques and styles. Her blend of smoking electric funk slide guitar, jazzy instrumentals, tight blues groove, soulful feminine vocals and Ana’s incredible stage presence makes her an irresistible force in the music world.
Ana Popovic’s first CD, titled 'HUSH' was released in 2000. In February 2003, she released her second album 'Comfort To The Soul', followed by the live CD/DVD titled 'ANA! Live in Amsterdam'.
In her brief career, she’s already enjoyed a number major honors. Among the highlights:
She and her band won the prestigious jazz award ‘Jazz a Juan-Revelation 2004’ in Juan Le Pins, France. The award shows recognition of Ana’s abilities in the jazz genre - a strong influence on her music.
During the ‘Rhythm & Blues Fest’ in Peer, Belgium, Ana is invited on stage by ‘The King of Soul’, Solomon Burke, who immediately invites her to join him as a special guest for the rest of his tour.
Ana was chosen to be part of the European ‘Jimi Hendrix Tribute tour’ in 2002. Ana also joins various artists Eric Burdon, Taj Mahal and Buddy Miles on a Jimi Hendrix tribute CD: ‘Blue Haze’.
Upon forming her first band, Hush, she immediately began making waves in her home country, and was performing a hundred shows annually and making regular appearances on Yugoslavian television.
Initially embraced by the blues music community, Ana is the first European ever nominated for ‘Best New Blues Artist’ at the W.C. Handy Award Show in Memphis, Tennessee (2003). She was also nominated for 'Best Blues Album' at the Jammie Awards in New York City, a three way nominee for 'Best Vocalist', 'Best Guitarist' and 'Best Album' at the French Blues Awards (2002).
In 2007, Ana Popovic set her sights on the U.S. and signed her first American record deal with the Los Angeles based Delta Groove Music. The subsidiary label Eclecto Groove Records was then formed and created to support Ana’s diverse and eclectic approach to music. Produced by Grammy Award winning producer John Porter and David Z., “Still Making History" signified Ana’s first official entry into the U.S. market and it was a smashing success. The album spent a total of 19 weeks on the Billboard blues chart and hit its peak position at #3!
Now after tirelessly touring the U.S. and Europe for the past two years Ana returns with her follow up effort "Blind For Love," produced by Mark Dearnley (AC/DC, Tom Petty, Paul McCartney). Joined by members of her regular touring band - Ronald Jonker (bass) and Andrew "Blaze" Thomas (drums), plus special guests Tony Braunagel (drums) and Mike Finnigan (Hammond B-3) from the Phantom Blues Band, Ana offers up a little something here for everyone including blues, rock, jazz, funk and gospel.
Ana demonstrates once again that she possesses the vision to forge ahead with her own uniquely distinctive style and continues to evolve as a deeply personal and gifted songwriter, carrying on the tradition of her father, her roots, and her true love of the music she was destined to play.

Review:
Nadir is the latest release from String Bone, the project name for Barry James Payne from Kitchener, Ontario. Nadir is an exhilarating compilation of Blues, Country and Roots Americana with a rich slate of quality tracks. Coloring the milieu with atmospheric instrumentation and evocative lyrics that traditionalists will love, Payne carves a brooding persona steeped in roots of Dylan's 'Blood On The Tracks', Springsteen's 'Nebraska', Wilco's elliptical Americana, Son Volt's balladry and assorted, harder-to-pinpoint roots, country, folk and blues idioms. Payne's songs rarely cater to the literal, instead navigating allegory and revelation pressed against a recessed southern Ontario landscape.
The highlights of the disc are many;
"Wash Away Our Sins" is an explosive assessment, a bone-rattling and pulsating blues rocker that embodies the 'Blood On The Tracks' side of Payne's influences. With implications reverberating into personal and spiritual realms, Payne laments life's ephemeral side and the basic human need for forgiveness and redemption.
"And We Laughed" is a repine and reflection of a lost loved one and features Payne's most tender vocal turn built on a foundation of pithy imagery. He uses a minimalist arrangement that hinges on his vocal ability and acoustic guitar. Elaboration presents itself lyrically through texture and nuance and musically through the adjunct of forlorn banjo and violin.
Fans of Wilco, Son Volt or Uncle Tupelo will love "Portland, Maine" which features a wicked performance by Bob Egan (formerly of Wilco) on pedal steel guitar. Reminiscent of Jay Farrar from Son Volt singing 'Windfall' and with an aching chorus - (I drove 3 million miles and my cell is on the blink / I've got whiskey in the trunk, the good Lord knows I need a drink / I ain't no sinner and I'm certainly no saint / I just came to see your name on the marquee lights on the outskirts of Portland, Maine) - this song feels like 5 am and driving home, but taking the long way because you don't want to stop listening. For added enjoyment you can hear Bob Egan's exceptional steel guitar throughout the disc on the songs "Midnight Train", "Queen Of The Lillies", "Southern Ontario Chill", and "If I Had A Dream".
"Killing Town" is the bread and butter here - a stark homage to turn-of-the-century American Roots that is all too human and replete with an edgy veneer. Professional sentimentalists will love the way he nails this ballad - it would sit perfectly in an episode of the HBO series Deadwood or a documentary of the Civil War. Payne combines an ascetic bassline, scorching electric guitar and seismic violin solos to fashion a grim and lonely universe of impeccable world-weary logic that despite the title preaches a message of anti-violence.
Payne offers a slight variation of his own eclecticism on "Honfleur". Respite with a wonderful accordion accompaniment from Paul Shilton that accentuates it's bluesy ambiance and provides a folksy feel, Payne adds a deft touch once again through well-written lyrics and a down-tempo arrangement that gives wonderful closure to the CD.
All in all, Nadir is a richly decorated composition. Payne scores big as a lyrical talent because of his depth and a focused, refined approach that isn't over-produced and this effort heralds the arrival of a major songwriter. The violin/pedal steel interplay throughout the disc stands out on many of the tracks and as a vocalist, Payne is efficient and works well within his range. Nadir is a spirited effort and being the second release by String Bone, we can expect a bright future for Payne and his band.

About String Bone:
Americana best describes the music of String Bone, a project born of the songwriting talents of Canadian singer-songwriter Barry James Payne. A mix of folk, blues, country, bluegrass, hillbilly and even other contemporary and traditional elements such as pop, rock and jazz. Payne has been playing and writing since the early ’80’s and has recently released his debut CD ‘nadir’. You might even call him a late bloomer. Payne set out in 2006 to write his debut record, subsequently bringing together several musicians, such as Blue Rodeo'’s Bob Egan, also formerly of Wilco and Kitchener native and veteran troubadour Shannon Lyon and went into the studio. Produced by Lyon, Payne and technical wiz engineer Chris Giesbrecht, the resulting recording, ‘nadir’ was labeled “truly a masterpiece” by Germany’s Music Star where String Bone toured after its release to encores show after show.
Payne has been playing with Dan Henshall on upright bass for the past three years and the two have formed a formidable musical bond. As well as perennial String Bone sideman, Steve Wood on pedal steel from Kitchener. Wood helps Payne create his haunting sound live. A perfect marriage to his intimate songs which he introduces with often comical and touching stories. He paints portraits with his words, and the various musicians involved help Payne change the colour of his pallet from emotional folk and country ballads to uptempo country-rock and bluesy, smoky, jazzy grooves.
Reviewers from the US, Canada, and Europe have lauded Payne on his debut record ‘nadir’ for his lyrics and melodies.

Review:
Since The Fire, the first independently produced full-length album from Megan Callahan is a masterful gem beaming with a number of feel-good hits. If she had a mission statement, Megan would probably say it is to write songs that celebrate life's ups as well as it's occasional downs. Not saccharine or forcefully idealistic, the music here is instead joyous, alluring and effervescent. The dulcet melodies, sublime vocals and unassuming lyrics speak volumes; they are neither manipulative nor overstated. When Megan sings "I've got a soundtrack in my head today, a little Stevie Wonder and some Stevie Ray" on the single "Happy Song", it is easy to visualize that sense of optimistic jubilation. There's no moral or story here, just genuine happiness. It's that sincerity that makes this CD so good.
That being said, Megan is cognizant to present her message with a sense of intimacy throughout the album. Combining elements of bluesy-rock, alt-folk and jazz, the album is not entirely solo, but the instrumentation is so sparingly added to Megan's vocals, (cajon drums, guitar, bass, violin) that it may as well be. This puts most of the focus on Megan's dusky vocals, and it works well; the CD is very reminiscent of the VH-1 "Unplugged" series except for the fact that it is studio recorded. It's that cozy. Megan's vocals are strong when necessary and understated for effect when needed; the production and musical arrangements are laid-back and perfectly polished. Musically, Megan and her band are capable of appealing to anyone who has been charmed by Sara Bareilles or Natasha Bedingfield
The album opens with the song "Catskill", an innocent charmer that immediately grabs your attention, a rustic alt-hipster piece that has a sophisticated ear for both harmony and counterpoint. Perhaps reminiscent of Joni Mitchell, this song alternately flirts with hints of folk, blues and jazz while remaining untethered to any one specific convention. "Song For You" is a wonderful follow-up and Megan shines vocally here, remaining crystal clear and pitch-perfect yet vocally flexible. There is no naivety here, independent production not withstanding. Both songs are intricate and hauntingly beautiful, carefully and complexly composed but wholly natural to effortlessly satisfying effect.
"I'll Get By" offers a slight shift in speed and though the mood is slightly more remorse, it doesn't impede the feel or rhythm of the CD. The violin solo works well here too, and the music is upbeat enough to keep from making the song too melancholy, though it does have a familiar west coast/alt-country flavor along the lines of Bonnie Raitt.
Aside from the stellar first three tracks, other highlights include "Happy Song", "Copout" and "The Battle". "So Into You" is a longing, slow-burning song that in its ennui fails to restrain its contradictory sexually-charged feel. The theme is not nearly as innocent as its lyrics conveys. It is a standout song and my personal favorite.
"Since The Fire" is a first-rate CD and worth purchasing. There is a lot to like about it and it's strength lies in Megan's vocal abilities. Even at the high end of her range she maintains a purring edge, capable of being sweet and sultry at the same time. The disc definitely sets or perpetuates a mood, but there is enough melodic diversity overall to keep things interesting while maintaining its intimacy. Her backing band is skilled and a perfect accompaniment, and "Since The Fire" would be a great addition to your CD collection.

About Megan Callahan:
Megan, known to friends as a "jill of all trades" has been a musician longer then she has been anything else. She grew up in New Jersey, where she was fortunate to have a childhood full of the arts. She credits her life now as a professional artist as inspired by all the amazing performances she saw as a child, and a family who knew and fostered the vitality of artistic expression in young people. She has been singing since she could speak, and writing songs just about as long.
Classically trained in guitar, piano and voice, she played clarinet, tenor sax and viola in school, sang in many choirs and ensembles, wrote and arranged music for theatrical productions and sang in many productions. She went to college and graduate school for theater, and is also an actor and director. Music has been the thread that connects her many interests and "trades" together.
Formerly part of the duo Voxangelica, Megan has been a solo performer for many years, and put out her first full length independent release "Since the Fire" in Buffalo, NY. She has toured nationally and internationally and is passionate about arts education, access to the arts and the planet.

Review:
The ethereal songs of Astronauts Of Antiquity and their latest release "Rocket Science For Dummies" provide a hypnotic listen that drips with beauty. It's a slow-burning, seductive dissertation built upon atmospheric soundscapes and celestial expressions. By combining elements of jazz, lounge, funk and soul with a hint of trip-hop, this CD is a beguilingly innocent blend of positive vibrancy and sexy chill.
"Rocket Science For Dummies" approaches like a spring shower or a blast of cool air on a scorching summer day. The singular vision of lead singer India and guitarist B. Rhyan yields a charming and endearing collection of songs. India masterfully floats her sultry voice over warm keyboards, impressive guitar and mesmerizing percussion. Her vocals are as effortless as they are powerful - songs like "Soup Du Jour" and "Breakthrough" are disarming in their lushness. "Breakthrough" adds a perfect organ accompaniment, a scorching bass intro and a soaring guitar solo that brings real heat and passion to India's sensually cool vocals.
"Everywhere", "Sweet-Tooth" and "Supa Soul" are more upbeat numbers, using driving melodies against an array of earnest rhythms and charging beats that yield engaging, danceable songs. "Beautiful Fate" is slightly brooding, but with amazing depth and breadth, a dark pop number that succeeds due to perfectly-timed rhythmic changes and wonderfully distorted beats in its chorus. The entrancing "Miss Caroline" is a spellbinding joie de vivre. "Strangest Places" stands out as an endearing and jazzy number with a deep bass line, enchanting horns and a Rickie Lee Jones vocal feel. A bonus track - "Love Is A Mantra" is an impressive and mysterious closing number that builds layer upon eclectic layer, encapsulating the sound that is Astronauts Of Antiquity.
As lyricists, Rhyan and India have an ear for completeness. The melodies are elegant and hummable and the ease with which India delivers her vocals adds an extra layer of polish. The arrangements are surprisingly full without being overbearing or complex. The production is excellent throughout with an eclectic-yet-cohesive feel that is absolutely stellar and drenched with a lookout-world-here-I-come swagger. Epic in scope but never overstaying their welcome, Astronauts Of Antiquity compare favorably to Thievery Corporation, Portishead and Zero 7. Charming and at the same time bewitching, "Rocket Science For Dummies" is addicting, and by the time it's first listen slips past you'll have a broad smile on your face. Buy it.

About Astronauts Of Antiquity:
Marrying the vibey, seductively ethereal textures of lounge, dub and trance with the timeless verities of great pop and rock songwriting, Astronauts of Antiquity have bridged various musical worlds to create a realm all their own. And while their journey has taken them around the globe, on their new album, Rocket Science For Dummies, they have brought it all back home, delivering an album that is seamless and mesmerizing, reflecting a unified expression of their musical vision.
Their music has been called everything from “urban-electro-organica,” to a “jazzy, neo-soulful, electronic exploration,” but more than any genre, what defines Astronauts of Antiquity is the musical and life partnership of India on vocals and B. Rhyan on guitars. The two first ran into each other – literally – at the airport, while India was rushing to make a flight. Three years later, the two once again encountered at one of India’s performances in Milwaukee. Backstage after her show, B. Rhyan was instantly captivated by India and sensed something more than simply a kindred spirit – he saw the possibility of a music and soul partner. (Only years later did the two recall their original chance encounter, which made their meeting feel even more like destiny.)
Originally an alternative rock act, India, and B. Rhyan birthed what would become Astronauts of Antiquity at of all places, a festival they were playing in Poland. India recalls, “We were an alt/rock band, but the last song we did was a dub influenced song, and the people went crazy. I think we were all like, ‘Holy Shit, we’re on to something here!’” Stints in Los Angeles, Detroit (where they won the Motor City Music Awards for best band, best female vocalist and best songwriters), New York, Dublin, London and Chapel Hill followed (and even a pilgrimage to India) as the band grew in stature and skill.
They earned laudatory reviews in such publications as Time Out London, who wrote, “Astronauts of Antiquity superbly deliver exquisite vocals and compelling grooves that always rock the house.” The Spectator in Raleigh, NC who opined, “Astronauts of Antiquity are a very savvy pop band in disguise. They offer up the ancient on a modern platter of undeniable tunes, catchy yet subtle like the muse.” URB from London chimed “AOA is transcendent, yet funky….open your mind, you won’t be disappointed!”
After releasing their debut album, AOA 1 in 2005, and building a following in the Chapel Hill, NC area, where they played as a seven piece, earning comparisons to such acts as Thievery Corporation, Zero 7, Bebel Giberto and Radiohead, India and B. Rhyan headed back to the New York City area, settling in the bucolic town of Nyack, NY. Beginning work on a new album, B. Rhyan gave AOA keyboardist Taylor Ryan an opportunity to try his hand at production. He recalls, “Taylor gave me a vision of a song – and it was so detailed, it was like a movie. India and I were touched by his attention to detail. And his musicality is so varied and deep that it’s complemented our own eclecticism perfectly.”
Eclecticism conveys a part of what Rocket Science For Dummies is. But it’s more than that – it’s the rarely successful marriage between club and lounge music – dub, trance, electronica, jazzy neo-soul – and great, unforgettable pop songwriting. You can hear it from the first notes of the album opener, “Everywhere,” with it’s luscious, loungy vibe and India’s powerful yet subtle vocals enveloping the track. It’s present in “Beautiful Fate,” where India’s smoky, seductive vocals mingle with emotionally affecting lyrics and a hypnotic melody and rhythm track that brings to mind Kid A-era Radiohead.
“Miss Caroline” is one of those perfect ballads that encapsulate AoA so definitively. An ode to the beauty of their former home in North Carolina, it serves as both a tribute and a love letter, with India sounding like the coolest jazz singer on the planet. Add B. Rhyan’s sublime guitar flourishes and a brilliant arrangement, it is nothing less than three plus minutes of musical nirvana. Again, it’s all about the quality of the songs, something that India and B. Rhyan were attuned to during the songwriting process. As B. Rhyan relates, “We’ve listened to a lot of things like Buddha Bar, and we love the vibe, but that music can get bland after a while. We wanted to have that vibe, but have it be emotive, where the song becomes most prominent.”
That goal is something that Astronauts of Antiquity have accomplished beautifully on Rocket Science For Dummies. And new album in tow, they are planning big things around the album, including a possible tour with Digable Planets (whose group member C-Knowledge appears on “Soup de Jour”), gigs in the New York City area, and a full-scale DIY campaign that befits this uniquely gifted band that marries song and vibe like very few do.

CD Review - At Least I'm Not With You by The Insomniacs
It is rare these days to see young blues musicians come along who have the kind of vision and commitments to play this music and make a go of it like these guys are. I am impressed by their talents and their humility…”

Review:
The Insomniacs new release "At Least I'm Not With You" is a superb revivalist/jump blues CD that combines traditional blues music with elements of west-coast swing and culling guitar licks played through vintage instruments. Deftly merging tradition and innovation into something really special, The Insomniacs have delivered a truly astounding CD reminiscent of Jimmie Vaughan, T-Bone Walker and Jimmy Henderson. For those blues fans who may be labeled as traditionalist, a listen here provides a decent alternative that is both a refreshing and an addictive sound. If you are into roots rock or a roadhouse blues sound that is a little tougher and slightly more lean, then "At Least I'm Not With You" is right up your alley.
Make no mistake, The Insomniacs have a distinctive vintage sound, but the updated production and instrumental arrangements are clean and crisp, adding more depth than say, pure rockabilly and more texture than most stereotypical swing bands. The energy found in both genres is there but thankfully, the monotony isn't. This helps create an addictive mixture that is both classic and fresh at the same time, especially when the band avoids cliched lyrical phrasing. However, even on the intentionally over-the-top rockabilly number, "She Can Talk" the band manages to still sound somewhat fresh, despite of a very Jerry Lee Lewis-like piano solo, by utilizing modern percussion arrangements and very tight vocals. It is this synergy between old and new, classic and contemporary, that works for The Insomniacs.
The standout tracks on the disc are "Lonely", "She Can Talk", "At Least I'm Not With You" , "Broke And Lonely" (a song that has a bit of a shuffle feel to it), and "Angry Surfer". The title track, "At Least I'm Not With You" has a great, Dr. John feel to it and really stands out. All are uptempo numbers that are quintessential west-coast blues in sound and are ineffably vintage in structure. Digging deeper into the CD, however, the listener will discover hidden gems that are more traditional and a couple of great "boogie woogies".
Traditionalists will be satisfied with the electrified "Description Blues" as well as the scorching version of Junior Wells' "Hoodoo Man Blues" (featuring a scathing harmonica played by special guest Mitch Kashmar), both fully-mature blues songs that are pure magic. The two songs are perfectly arranged Chicago Blues numbers that feature haunting bass by Dean Mueller and wonderfully muscular vocals from Vyasa Dodson, as well as a percussion line from Dave Meylan that purrs like the glass packs on a '51 Mercury Flathead. Blues aficionados will love Dodson's guitar work on "Description Blues" as well as a B-3 solo by Alex Shakeri that is sinfully good. "Directly From My Heart To Yours" is a song that creates a perfect segue from traditional blues to the more swinging sound of jump blues by mixing elements of both.
"Root Beer Float" and "Insomniacs Boogie" are wonderful instrumentals that allow each of the performers to shine individually by combining a series of solo efforts into entertaining boogie woogie blues numbers that are absolutely scrumptious.
This album is full of the ratchet rhythms which connect the time-honored traditions of Chicago Blues to the slinky funk style of vintage Delta Blues to the naievity of early rock & roll. The Insomniacs offer superior arrangements and production that result in a masterful CD that encapsulates a true revivalist sound. The CD never tires, even after consecutive spins through the CD Player, and each play guarantees the listener will dicover something new and defining on each song. Released in April 2009 as the follow-up to the critically-acclaimed "Left Coast Blues", "At Least I'm Not With You" is a fiery follow up that is both an astounding and necessary addition to the collection of anyone who appreciates good music.

CD Review - Meet Me In My Day Dream by Brother Magnum
“ In Texas they Say things come BIG. Well Brother Magnum is no exception to this. With only getting a general image of him thru listening to his CD’s and his responses to this interview, I would be comfortable in saying that Brother Magnum is more than a Ten Gallon Hat and an Armadillo has nothing on this Funky, Soul playing Guitarist who sincerely represents a unique, distinctive Austin, Texas sound that covers Blues with more depth than an oil well of Soul, Funk, Delta and true Sizzling Texas Blues.... ”

Review:
On Meet Me In My Daydream, Brother Magnum serves up a heavy dose of his easily identifiable funk-induced blues and slashing guitar throughout eleven songs - all of which he wrote, produced and arranged. His penetrating, signature solos are pleasingly demonstrative and pump through his veins, literally exploding from his fingertips in flammable fashion. His able-bodied vocals command your attention and can be compared favorably to Albert King. Fans of Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix, Lenny Kravitz, and Robert Cray will find delight in this effort as well.
Many blues artists live recordings far surpass their studio efforts - there is something about performing in front of crowds that brings out the best in blues performers that somehow traditionally fails to translate well to the studio. Brother Magnum manages to bridge that gap - for a studio release many of the songs have a distinctive "live" feel. This is a tribute to the arrangements and fine production on this effort as well as a testimony to his superb backing musicians.
Brother Magnum's classic "Have A Good Time" will erupt from your speakers like a hurtling fireball and is one of my all time blues favorites. His scorching guitar solo on "What I Need" is almost too short; it is so good you will wish he extended it a little longer, though a very Jimi Hendrix-like riff and vocal echo throughout the song is equally enjoyable. I was half-expecting the good brother to segue into "Red House". One could identify this song as psychedelic blues and be spot on. It's a great song.
"Cocaine Sheila" has traditional blues roots and bemoans the addictive nature of an unattainable woman in a descriptive, horizontal bump-n-grind manner. Brother Magnum's vocals are at the forefront of this number and the guitar is slightly understated, and it works well. A unyielding saxophone solo at 1:50 into the song accentuates the message and gives it a white-hot attitude. "I Should Have Known" and "Mexico" have a shuffle feel to them, blending traditional blues and soul that is incongruous to any specific genre. Both have a birth-of-rock-n-roll feel that is probably the best way to describe them. "Nee-Mo Money" and "Love Wrong Blues" provide wonderful examples of Brother Magnum's celebrated guitar-playing ability. To use a term that is often wrongly associated with heavy metal music, the man simply shreds.
Meet Me In My Daydream is a great addition to any blues lovers collection, a great mix of up tempo funkified numbers, retro soul blues, roots rock, traditional blues and even a shuffle or two. You can't re-invent the wheel but you can still make top of the line tires. Brother Magnum has not invented a new genre of music but he's doing it as good as anyone ever has.

About Brother Magnum:
Brother Magnum is a double-barreled, high-firepower classic soul music man for the modern age. With a dead aim for making every show he plays with his band The Razor Bumps into a memorable musical party galore, the Austin-based singer, songwriter and guitarist blends the best from the golden age of soul, the coolest blues and the finest roots of rock’n’roll into a sound that blows you away in the most delightful ways.
His veteran musician’s savvy and knack for creating fresh soulful sounds and songs that speak to the heart and get the butt shaking is etched into the proverbial grooves of his new album, Feel Like A King. As Magnum concludes, “I may not be the latest thing, but I am the real thing.”
Within the Brother Magnum sound you can hear a lifetime of loving and making music. “I’ve done it all, man,” he explains. “I’ve done hip-hop, I’ve done country, I’ve done rock’n’roll, I’ve done pop and new wave — all that stuff at times in my life.” And now he’s making the music that comes straight from his heart to yours.
As the youngest of eight kids, Magnum grew up hearing a spectrum of great musical artists and styles. “My dad was into James Brown and Ike & Tina Turner. My Mom loved everything from Al Green to Neil Diamond to The Doors, and they were both heavily into Sly & The Family Stone,” he recalls. “One of my sisters was into Kiss, one of my brothers was a big Parliament-Funkadelic and another brother was into The Cars, Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson. I was just saturated with all this music as a kid. You go to my hi-fi to this day, and I’ll be listening Metallica one minute and the next minute I’ll be listening to Buddy Guy. I can truly say that I don’t have a favorite style of music.”
He first started making music at age 11 when he snuck onto his oldest brother’s drum kit and surprised him when he walked in and heard how Magnum had a natural knack for the backbeat. The guitar and keyboards soon followed, and at 13 he played his first show. “All the girls that were there saw me and they were all screaming my name as the lights were flashing. Needless to say, I haven’t been right ever since,” he explains with a chuckle.
His family background and itinerant youth as the child of a career military man also contributes to Magnum’s expansive music, attitudes and world view. His father’s family has Afro-Cuban roots and his mother’s lineage boasts a Native-American heritage. He grew up in various parts of California as well as Texas, Oklahoma, Virginia and Florida, finally landing back in Central Texas by his senior high school years. “The cool thing was that you experienced every kind of culture and all kinds of people, ideologies, and music,” Magnum observes. “My parents are very unique in that they always encouraged us to accept people for who they are, not what they are.”
The sum of his considerable musical experience led him to ultimately make the music closest to his heart as Brother Magnum. “For me, it’s more than trying to make it and be a big rock star,” he explains. “I want to do it my way. I want to be able to write the music I feel and bring it to people so they can enjoy it too.”
His debut album, Meet Me In My Daydream, was a first Brother Magnum shot that “erupt[s] from your speakers like a hurtling fireball,” says SonicJive.com. “Fans of Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix, Lenny Kravitz, and Robert Cray will find delight in this effort… a great mix of up-tempo funkified numbers, retro soul blues, roots rock, traditional blues and even a shuffle or two. You can’t reinvent the wheel but you can still make top of the line tires. Brother Magnum has not invented a new genre of music but he's doing it as good as anyone ever has.”
His aim was to make an album that invited listeners in and took them somewhere wonderful. “I wanted the music to say: Come into this daydream with me and see if you can feel this vibe that I’m feeling. I’m gonna make you feel good. Let’s go to a feel good place together.”
For him, it’s all about drawing out the soulfulness, showmanship and pop appeal he learned from such prime inspirations as Otis Redding and Sly Stone and blending it with all the music he loves and the spirit within his soul. “My concept is no concept,” Magnum explains. “This is what it is and who I am. Get yourself loose and enjoy it. Come on this journey with me."
“This stuff that I’m doing now is the most honest music I’ve made because I’m grabbing what feels right to me,” he concludes, “I’m going to my piano and I’m grabbing my guitar and writing. And I don’t say I want it to feel like this or sound like this. I just let it flow, and it’s a beautiful thing.”
That’s because Brother Magnum is the Lone Star State’s soul brother number one, and he proves it on "Feel Like A King". It takes but a listen to indeed feel like a king or a queen as well as a non-stop dance machine. And that’s an offer no genuine fan of real and great music ever wants to miss.

CD Review - The Trinity EP by Dylan Lloyd

Review:
Dylan sent me his EP, The Trinity EP for review, and I must state that I am incredibly sad that there is but 3 songs to this release. Honestly, this EP has me literally begging for more. I imagine anyone who listens will want more Dylan Lloyd.
This is musical nirvana. To find a flaw in this is to say the Mona Lisa should be smiling more. In other words, this EP is virtually, and aesthetically, perfect. Music - perfect. Lyrics - perfect. Arrangements - perfect. Production - perfect.
Perhaps releasing an EP of but three songs allows one to absolutely perfect an effort - however I have heard other songs by Dylan on SonicJive and they are all just as good. Produced by Grammy nominated Gary Loizzo (Styx, Dennis De Young, Survivor, REO Speedwagon, American Breed) Dylan Lloyd is a man with a plan and with the talent to launch into the stratosphere.
With mainly his voice and his piano, Lloyd holds your ears hostage for the course of all three songs. Don't worry, after the opening 10 seconds of 'The Ride', you begin to get the feeling that Dylan is more talented and possesses more passion than Michael McDonald, and being the only comparison I can make, I must point out how unfortunate that is. For Michael McDonald. . . . and with good cause.
The first single from the album 'All I Wanna Do' is a mesmerizing piece that would make even a tornado stop it's destruction and just dance to its rich and delicious melody. A great combination of Lloyd's vocals, stunning piano work and an accompanying jazzy guitar and percussion. 'The Ride' is my favorite song and 'Visible' is great as well. In fact picking a favorite may be akin to having to decide which of your children is your favorite, It simply cannot be done.
It would be a shame for anyone to have an opportunity to listen to disregard this, as it is musically the best 13 minutes by one artist that I have ever reviewed.. To quote one of my favorite movies "Garden State" . . . "listening to this will change your life."

About Dylan Lloyd:
Dylan Lloyd's music career officially began at the age of 15; he was the lead vocalist and piano player of a very popular local band on the south side of Chicago known as PANGEA from the year 2002 to 2005. One of their last and most notable performances was at the Rave in Milwaukee, Wisconsin opening up for critically acclaimed band MEDESKI, MARTIN, AND WOOD in November of 2004.
By early spring of 2005, Pangea had disbanded; from that point on Dylan Lloyd has been pursuing a solo music career in Chicago, and Los Angeles, at an incredibly successful pace.
In the fall of 2007, Dylan Lloyd had a brief departure from being a solo artist to join a band called LOOSE CHANGE. They ended up recording the early incarnation of Dylan Lloyd's three song EP titled "THE TRINITY" with Grammy award nominee and producer of STYX Gary Loizzo; the most notable songs from this album were "ALL I WANNA DO" and "THE RIDE". The third song entitled "VISIBLE" was never officially released.
Various media outlets in Chicago have been supporting Dylan Lloyd ever since his EP "THE TRINITY" was released on iTunes in January of 2009. NBC 5: CHICAGO, the RED EYE newspaper, FEEDBACK MAGAZINE, and other media outlets have all featured Lloyd and given his music critical acclaim.
Lloyd has also made numerous radio appearances since becoming a solo artist. "THE RIDE" has been on nationally acclaimed Chicago radio station 93.1FM WXRT, as well as other songs of his that have been on Chicago area radio stations and online radio stations. "ALL I WANNA DO" was headlined and promoted by WINDY CITY RECORDS (an independent Chicago record label) on one of their seasonal compilation albums in 2009.
The future for Dylan Lloyd in the music industry shows extreme promise and longevity. In December of 2009, Dylan Lloyd signed a music publishing deal with "RADAR MUSIC, LLC/BUG MUSIC, INC.". From that point forward, Dylan has been establishing himself in Los Angeles, as well as Chicago, as one of the most outstanding singer/songwriters of his generation. He has written and co-produced with many well established producers such as mulit-platinum producer MdL (JUSTIN BIEBER, CHRIS BROWN, STEPHEN JERZAK), Kevin Savigar (ROD STEWART, JOSH GRACIN), Deron Johnson (MILES DAVIS, SEAL), gold producer Michael Jay (EMINEM, MARTIKA), Tim Fagan (COLBIE CAILLAT, JASON MRAZ), platinum producer Soundtrakk (LUPE FIASCO) and many more. He has been interviewed by two major Southern California magazines called the "MUSIC CONNECTION" and the "L.A. EXAMINER" about getting signed to a music publishing deal. Lloyd is swiftly making his way up the ranks as one of the best and most respected singer/songwriters in the music business; look out for his second highly anticipated album in the summer/fall of 2011.

Review:
I am noticing that the current trend amongst indie bands is to go with an EP rather than a full CD release. While this is likely attributed to our current financial crunch, the positive is that efforts are way stronger when they are concentrated to a 4 or 5 song release and of course less expensive for the consumer. The Monster EP by the Outer Vibe is a vigorous, well-recorded effort that is as strong as any release we have reviewed this year.
The Outer Vibe's sound is an innovative take on rock music's most timeless elements, which pays tribute to the voice that screamed out in the 1960's and 70's for change and freedom.
This is the third release for The Outer Vibe, following Games We Play, released in 2006 and Pretty Good which was released in 2004. Never has the band sounded more confident, combining an amped up, crazed-inventiveness with expressive and expansive range and a little more psychedelia than their previous releases. This is good stuff.
The EP opens with "We Created A Monster", a faced paced, up tempo number that is pure fury and hysteria and includes a signature 'scream'. followed by a flurry of extravagance and spectacle that is breathtaking. Taking a stab at greed and the self-fulfilling prophecy that we have become, this song is by far the Outer Vibe's best effort yet. There is so much going on instrumentally but it all fits, from the marked changes in tempo, the pauses, tremendous percussion from Jeff Brems, and yes, the aforementioned scream. I can't imagine what it was like to create this arrangement but it had to be fun. This is what music should be.
"On The Run" is a catchy song that fits perfectly following "Monster" - reminiscent of some of the best indie rock from the 1990's, but with a hint of 70's psychedelia power pop (think "Love Is Like Oxygen" by Sweet or ELO when they were at their symphonic apex). Again, the arrangement and instrumentation are top notch and Sean Zuidgeest is at his best vocally here, showing tremendous range and sustain. The song builds in intensity reaching an unparalleled crescendo and a very strong finish.
"Dance Around" makes a great case for the EP's first single, built on and around a strong foundation of keyboards and trumpet, highlighting the tremendous musicianship of Lisa Kacos. That is not to diminish everything else that is going on here; indeed the guitar work of Nick Horsford is absolutely rousing and Zuidgeest is again stellar. If that is not enough, Andrew Dornoff's bass work is genuinely bloodthirsty here - he may need to be chained up! This is cabaret-style progressiveness that is definitely the highlight of the EP.
The final song on The Monster EP is "Your Girlfriend's A Witch". Stunning. Nick is AMAZING on his guitar solo, which for lack of a better word is absolutely incendiary. A white-hot performance with all-star efforts from the entire band. Again, percussion and rhythm really stand out on this track.
This is frenzied energy at it's controlled best. In fact, I am amazed at the way the Outer Vibe seems to be in control, with near surgical precision no less, of their own musical chaos. This is a five-star effort - all tracks are highly enjoyable and the EP carries a SonicJive.com MUST HAVE recommendation. You will absolutely love the single "On The Run". Get this EP right away.

Review:
The name is somewhat confusing but the best way to describe it is that The Soul Of John Black is a musical group with a virtual all-star cast led and directed by John "JB" Bigham, aka "John Black" on lead guitar and lead vocals. Together, TSOJB create a cocksure collection of soul and roots blues reminiscent of Al Green.
JB boats an impeccable resume, having collaborated with Miles Davis, both writing and playing on Davis' last studio LP. Bigham has also played with artists as varied as Eminem, Dr. Dre, Rosey, Joi, Nikka Costa, Bruce Hornsby and Everlast.
First and foremost, the compositions, arrangements and production stand head and shoulders above everything. To be sure this is a polished effort musically, and Bigham himself uses incendiary acoustic slide guitar to produce a pure roots sound. Combine that with elements of soul, funk, hip-hop and a little rock and you have a whole new genre-defying eclectic sound.
Additionally, Bigham's alternately throaty and honeyed voice floats effortlessly over the slickly produced bed of rootsy blues accompaniment to enhance this captivating production. Add the Al Green passion and emotion and "Black John" instantly becomes a classic and must-have effort.
The stand out tracks are 'Betty Jean', 'Push Into The Night', 'Last Forever' and the soulful closing songs, 'Holiday Inn' and 'Thinking About You', which is my absolute favorite. Expect big things from The Soul Of John Black and get the CD right away.

About The Soul Of John Black:
The Soul Of John Black is the nom de musique of John Bigham, whose impressive resume includes a stint as percussionist with the Miles Davis band, eight years of guitar and keyboard work with the pioneering rock-funk-ska band Fishbone, and touring and session work with Dr. Dré, Eminem, Nikka Costa, Bruce Hornsby and Everlast, just to name a few.
"I never intended to be a performer," Bigham says. "I loved music and wanted to be a part of it, but by picking up a guitar, coming to California and telling people I was a musician, I put things in motion. Somebody told somebody else I was a musician, then next thing I knew, I was in Paris playing with Miles Davis. When Miles first asked me if I could play percussion, I said yes, even though I'd never played percussion, because I knew how percussion should sound, and I knew I could do it. He said “Show me,' and I did, and that was it."
The arrangements blend blues, folk, funk, rock, country, classic soul, Gospel and world music, but Bigham doesn't spend a lot of time planning out his line of attack. "I have my own style, but I have no preconceived notions about what a song's going to sound like. I get it down by feel and instinct, just doing what comes naturally. It's the same approach I've taken to my entire career, and my life, for that matter.

CD Review - Anamnesis by Shauna Burns
“Saturated with melancholy with the loss of love, its lingering memories, and other very personal thoughts encapsulated within perfect piano-driven songs... With haunted vocals, effectively ethereal music, and a delivery that makes you believe every word.”

Review:
Consummate musical intelligence, clarity of expression, and distinctive drama run throughout Anamnesis.
Much of this is exhibited in the very first track, "Smell", where proceedings begin with a trembling, but understated control, followed by a slight pause, and then a gentle escalation that creates a word-painting and enchanting experience. Shauna is just so "clued-in", using simple but brilliantly effective touches. This is easily the album's most important song as it creates both its ethereal theme and spacious mood. When she sings, she evokes a gentle upward curve, and as an audience, we are vaguely conscious of this, yet irrevocably drawn to listen to her message. Threading celestial imagery with an expressive musical arrangement, "Smell" is one of the best tracks on the CD.
The second track, and my favorite on Anamnesis is "a Letter". By knotting fragments of intellectual interest with a starry atmosphere, Burns creates a very memorable experience here. This is a masterpiece of construction with eloquently layered vocals and a musical backdrop that climaxes perfectly, a definite dynamic of both tension and release. Easily the greatest sonic divergence from the rest of the album, "a Letter" is fleshed out with full band accompaniment that unfolds in mesmerizing fashion.
"Wind" is an excellent choice as the centerpiece of this EP as it is the perfect showcase with an emphasis on both Shauna's angelic vocals and equally alluring piano. Perhaps the neatest trick in Burns' arsenal is an expressive delivery that strives for emotional honesty and simple beauty. This is an elegant sampling of what is to be expected from Burns - she breathes life into each song, giving them intensity, beauty and depth along with a subtle touch of allure.
"Driving far" is the catchy, memorable song from Anamnesis. It instantly begs you to sing along, with perfect changes in pitch that add a majestic opulence and texture to the delightful poetry of its lyrics. Burns makes it look easy here, but that should not minimize her work. This a great song and one that you can imagine enjoying for a long time.
The album's penultimate track, "So tell me....." is a glorious final flurry of magnificence and a sensational closer. This is a gutsy, eloquent lament of dwindling passion - shimmering, haunting, aching. Both moody and beguiling, "So tell me...." explores duality through the need for both love and pain, and the need for chaos and balance. These contradictions form the appeal for this song, bit it is it's intimacy that places it above and beyond. There is a real feeling and emotion to her lyrics which scores high marks because it is so believable, and a genuine longing in her vocals. Extra points for a beautiful arrangement and the haunting cello work of Steve Nelson.
Anamanesis, which means recollection, is a five-song EP that offers an introspection into the five physical senses. Marketed as sequel to her previous release, The Moon And The Fire Circle, Anamnesis is an excellent achievement and a wonderful continuation. Fans of Tori Amos, Kate Bush and Amy Lee of Evanescence may find similarities but Burns fuses cascading piano and a dynamic voice to come across as slightly more uplifting while remaining genuinely sincere. There is a semblance of broodiness and the lush arrangements to be expected of fans of her peers, but Shauna Burns stands ably on her own and this EP is a definite five-star recommendation. Give it some alone time and immerse yourself in it and realize just how special Anamnesis is.

About Shauna Burns:
Anamnesis is pianist/singer/songwriter Shauna Burns’ next work released under Red Rock Music in April 2009. This 5 song EP is the continuation of The Moon and the Fire Circle and the next step in her musical journey. Anamnesis, which means "recollection" or "remembrance", focuses on the senses that live in our memories. "Music is a trigger for things we remember," Shauna explains. "Each of the songs on Anamnesis represents one of the senses." The first song on the EP is titled "Smell" ...its reference is obvious. "A Letter" embraces the gift of sight, "Wind" references touch, "Driving Far" taste, and "So Tell Me…" our sense of hearing. The new album is full of Shauna’s trademark piano and vocals, James Clark on drums and percussion, Steve Lemmon on guitar and bass, Ryan Tilby on mandolin and dobro, Kiley Astle on violin and Steve Nelson on cello.
Shauna’s latest release in 2008, The Moon and the Fire Circle, was a fusion of the dark and light sides of the soul. It was a journey from the light to the dark and back to the light again. The Promise Live cheers: “With her ethereal voice, spacious arrangements and lots of piano, you can't help but become enchanted with The Moon and The Fire Circle.” And Southwest Blend acclaims that “Shauna Burns is a phenomenal talent, and the music on this album will take any listener on a journey that will connect one’s inner soul to the universe.” Now the journey continues…
Shauna's ethereal vocals and beautiful piano developed while growing up in Miami, Florida. Inspired by her mother's love for the piano, her songwriting thrived and when she headed west for college her music met cheers and enthusiastic recognition. After receiving a bachelor's degree in Anthropology at the University of Utah, Shauna spent a year in Europe preparing her debut album. Released under Red Rock Music in 2005 Every Thought was the foothold that lifted this talented pianist and singer to critical acclaim. “Beautiful cascading piano [and] ethereal vocals… a new fangled fusion that will ignite a spark that will be hard to replicate. Perfect.” States Smother.net. Shauna's songwriting extension to Every Thought was her 2006 follow up EP release entitled, Desert Tune.
Shauna has embarked on multiple vigorous tours since 2006 with over 75 shows and appearances stretching from coast to coast in the U.S. and the U.K. The new Wandering Planets Tour kicked off in April 2009.
“Around You”, the first single from The Moon and the Fire Circle, reached number 7 on the FMQB AC Chart, was one of WCH Radio’s “Top Songs for 2008” and reached number 1 on “Song Vault Radio”. The Moon and the Fire Circle was selected “Best of 2008” by Collected Sounds and The Promise Live. Radio Crystal Blue also chose Shauna as one of the “Top Recording Artists of the Year 2008”.
Shauna's debut CD, Every Thought was selected as one of the Top CD's of 2005 by Collected Sounds and the single, “Pink Girl”, was chosen as the number1 single from the MAACP show. The album was chosen for “Best of the Batch” from the Music Industry News Network and featured on TowerPod.com, Billboard, VH1, Artist Direct, AOL Music, Fox TV and countless others.

CD Review - My Heart's Desire by Margo Rey (Margo Reymundo)
“Margo brought a lot to the table with provocative lyric ideas and a sophisticated melodic sense. I think we wrote three songs the first session and of the three, “Let The Rain” really stood out. I love the feminine perspective she brings to the verse imagery, and there was never a doubt that she would deliver vocally when it came time to record”

Review:
She may not be household name yet, but soulful sultry seducer Margo Reymundo has perfected the art of the boudoir ballad. Chiefly, when she sings of love, passion and devotion, she actually sounds as if she means it. Her sentiments are not complex or tortuous, but rather humbly and simply about affairs of the heart. A great example is "Between Us" - as a listener I am buying everything she is selling here. That's what is so amazing about My Heart's Desire. It combines adventurous aspects of avant-garde jazz with pop sensibility. Anyone who has previously found vocal jazz music intimidating or lacking soul could find no better introduction.
The combination of elegant texture and soulful arrangements makes this CD a winner on all counts. The title track is the first single from My Heart's Desire and is a warm and catchy effort that is both extremely fluid and free-spirited.
Reymundo's scorching, bi-lingual version of Carly Simon's "You Belong To Me" is nothing short of inspirational and provides a perfect segue into the ethereal "Picture The Way Back/The Way Back". "I Saw You", possibly the second single from this CD, is a crossover blues/soul/pop hybrid that should garner a lot of critical and mainstream appeal and is the strongest track on the CD.
Reymundo's aching version of Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine" is breathtakingly heart-stopping, and includes searing yet unexpected guitar solo and strong organ accompaniment.
"Picture This" is a summery, light-hearted number that plays well no matter the mood of the listener.
Reymundo has a full and powerful voice and has mastered the pitch-perfect landing: indeed, vocals are the emphasis of this release and though the instrumentation is not understated, the goal of this project was obviously to create an equal and balanced synergy between the two. In a direct quote taken from the artist's liner notes, My Heart's Desire "is an elegant reminder why the human voice is referred to as an 'instrument'. She's created nothing less than a ferociously nuanced and passionate sound that defies nomenclature".
My Heart's Desire is set for release on March 24, 2009 on Reymundo's own label, Organica Records. Fans of Norah Jones, Adele and Sade will find this effort equally on par.

About Margo Rey:
Ferociously nuanced and passionate sound that defies nomenclature. Margo Rey, cognizant of that inevitable realization, refers to it as “Organica” a kind of counterpoise to “Electronica.” In other words, she’s articulating a world constructed of unfettered vocals that rivals anything created with synthesized sound.
Margo Rey was born in Acapulco Mexico and laid her professional foundation with over a decade of classical music training under the exclusive tutelage of classical voice professor Dr. Luther Stripling. At the age of 16, Rey fronted an all female rock band Debutante (The Debs,) who toured the U.S. as well as overseas and also sang in a 3 piece power pop band called the Ritual before beginning a career in jazz. After becoming the band leader for the Latin/Jazz R&B Sextet Miss Margo and the Lost Souls, Rey was signed to an indie label (Exitos-Latinos) where she recorded a Tejano/Pop Spanish album. This release boasted one top five and two top twenty singles. She soon caught the attention of actor Edward James Olmos who recommended her for a principal role in the bound for Broadway musical Selena Forever . This led to a number of theatre credits including Saturday Night Fever, Latin Heat, Like Jazz, Senor Discretion Himself, Zorro and Canta Lunga. During this time period she began crafting and touring her own original music that she calls “Organica.”
